Our Butterfly Adventure

This adventure started when I was weeding one day and I discovered a fat green caterpillar in some weeds. I helped Hazel get a jar for it and I looked up on the internet how to take care of it.

Well after a few days he died, or at least I think he did. I thought I saw him move a little so I put him back outside so I didn't feel like I killed him.
Hazel was pretty upset so I told her I would get her one of those Live Butterfly Gardens that I had seen ads for on tv. We ordered it and it came in like 2 or 3 days with 10 cute little baby caterpillars.
Which turned into 10 big, hairy, kind of creepy caterpillars.

We left for the cabin and our trip on Thomas and when we came back we found some of the caterpillars had changed into a chrysalis.

Once they had all made their chrysalis I had to move them to their butterfly cage. It was really creepy moving them because they wiggle.

One day Hazel started saying a butterfly was out but I thought she was just kidding and then she said "Oh its so beautiful!". She sounded so excited I went to see and sure enough our first butterfly was out.

This was the entertainment at my house.

A few interesting facts about butterflies,
-They actually turn into liquid inside the chrysalis and reform into a butterfly.
-They like to suck the juice out of oranges.
-When they come out they drip red stuff that looks like blood but it is just left over coloring from their wings. We told Hazel it was paint from its wings.
-As soon as they are out their main purpose in life is to reproduce. Yep that is what they are doing. I looked it up. I had 3 sets doing this. This was my cue to set them free.
We invited Hazel's friend Katie over for our butterfly releasing. They were all determined to get a butterfly to sit on their finger. I told them they could try but I really didn't think it would work.
I was wrong.

This one had a hurt wing, it had come out of its chrysalis like that.

Then we decorated butterfly shaped cookies.
